The Pursuer

‘…Rather against the people who hang around him, myself, the Marquesa
and Marcel, for example. Basically we’re a bunch of egotists; under the pretext of watching out for Johnny what we're doing is protecting our idea of him, getting ourselves ready for the pleasure Johnny's going to give us, to reflect the brilliance from the statue we've erected among us all and defend it till the last gasp’

This excerpt from ‘The Pursuer’ by Julio Cortazar, which is part of our reading list of Originative Work, is very inspiring in my eyes. It talks about individual perception; how we sometimes see other people not in the way they see themselves. If we see something in a person we like, we tend to only watch out for this and forget about everything else that might be there too. Furthermore we like to present ourselves in the way want to be seen by others, mostly in a positive way to catch people’s attention.

Referring to the text above one can say it is easier to see the good in a person and forget about the darker side. In our society we want to be happy all the time, we want to be gifted in what we do. So we look up at this talented person, who of course must be happy because she is so talented, and if we are not as happy at least we know someone who is.

Space and time: "The Shape of time".

After rehearsal, on Tuesday, we had an interesting chat about this; I thought it might be useful for us all to have a look at these videos, which explain, in a clear way, Einstein's discoveries: "Spacetime" and the theory of "General Relativity".

The Shape of time
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y53hh-LAbLk&feature=related
From this video:
"History moves at the speed of light."
"We will always observe the past and never the present."
"To explain time's shape we could use the Einstein theory of "General Relativity"."

Unification of space and time : Relativity
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfv2AiVfnWA&feature=player_embedded
From this video:
"Things moving along surfaces in the spacetime fabrique".

Watching these videos I thought: how amazing is that, inside a dance school, during our creative process , we arrived at imagining the Shape of Time...

Kung Fu Panda - Future of all philosophy???

When we last spoke in class, I briefly remembered this particular quote of the animated movie 'Kung Fu Panda' and thought it was very apt, as it is, in itself, a culmination of eastern philosophy meeting western culture, and it even brings back the question we touched upon, about what actually IS right now... How long does right now last for before it becomes the past, and would it be possible for right now to be anticipated...?

Everything is made from the same elemental particules. Space and time and its realities (corrected) :)

Hello everyone!
There are two videos I would like to share with all of you.

First more formal: latest physics discoveries-->http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4237751840526284618#docid=-1406370011028154810

(special example: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4237751840526284618# àelectron quantum experiment)
And the second one: "What the bleed do we know": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-azcMJ5JS4

We are working with the perception of space and time and how to be fully committed to the moment. Almost always, when we talk about space and time, we relate these two concepts to physics: to the reality we see. But there is much more that physics can show us and it goes much further beyond the perception of time and space and the idea of what reality is for us.
How to be committed, fullminded? Those states of mind are often connected to "spirituality", in the sense of being aware of existence and how we express ourselves "in it", "at the same time" as it expresses itself "in ours". It seems we can't talk outside the frames of space and time... Space and time exist in the interactions of all the expression of Being, but what happens when we feel as one? When we feel the Being?

I would like to share some words from Osho's book," Come follow to you" (chapter: Politics and Love). He is an Indian philosopher and fullminded:

“You ask me: “ Osho, I don’t know who I am”. There is no need. The only need is: don’t be anything else, just be that which you don’t know you are. Don’t move outside it. There is no need to know it because you are it already.” (...)
“I feel like I need grounding”. You need it. But grounding has nothing to do with knowledge; grounding has something to do with being. In being, time and space are not there, they both disappear. You will be grounded only when you come to a certain state within- where you cannot say who you are, where you cannot say where you are, where you cannot say when you are. Everything has stopped; time does not move. Something deep within you has stopped.
There is no space. You cannot say where you are. The “where” is irrelevant. You cannot show where you are on the map. You are no more on the map, you don’t belong to the map. You are no more part of the measured, you are no more part of the charted. You are transcendence. You can look at space, but you are not in space; you can look at time but you are not in time. Then you are grounded, this is what I call “being”." (...)
"You are already grounded, you just need awareness."

These words help me to understand the relationship between the new physics discoveries and what we already are "being". Also arriving at the conclusion of the scientist in the first video and the general idea in the second one, I would like to put together two sentences, one from the first video and the other one from Osho's words:

"An atom is spread out all over the space until we measure it."

"You are no more part of the measured, you are no more part of the charted. You are transcendence."

We received this comment via e-mail from one of our readers, our very same Neil Webster. As it is very long to post it as a comment we have added to the post: Thanks Neil:

As I recent physics graduate, I hope you don't mind me commenting.
Aahh!! Such an innacurate and misleading statement!!

The Standard Model of particle physics breaks down the Universe into fundamental (cannot be split further) particles divided into quarks, leptons and four forces with their hypothesized exchange particles.
Quarks come in six flavours (up, down, charm, strange, top, bottom). Most of the matter around us is formed from combinations of up and down quarks: these make up the protons and neutrons that make up the atom. The numbers of protons determine the type of atoms and these are grouped together carefully in the Periodoc Table. There are over 100 known types of atom. Everything around us is mainly hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and a few heavier atoms. Thus, everything is not made from the SAME
atoms... but from many different ones that combine together to form molecules (2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen make up water, for example!!).

I can go further. Plenty around us is not made of atoms. The light in the room is photons (the exchange particles of the electromagnetic force)....and the radio waves, microwaves and infra-red radiation in
the room are different wavelength photons.....and interact with matter all the time!!

Also, trillions of neutrinos (leptons) are passing through our bodies as they rarely interact. So, everything is made of fundamental quarks, leptons and radiation is a more accurate  statement.....although it is by no means complete...you may have heard of dark matter, dark
energy....and there is the measured energy associated with the quantum vacuum.... plus everything possibly broken down further into vibrating strings (string theory????????) or loops of energy (loop
quantum gravity).

It all goes on and on. That is what physicists are trying to do........get to a fundamental level.....and build everything we see from that.
Thanks for the two-slit cartoon. I guess the crucial thing to understand (which the cartoon does not stress enough) is that the particle does not interact with itself but with its own WAVEFUNCTION.........it behave like a wave.....and here is something vital:

A particle is LOCALIZED....it can be located and its position measured. A wave is NON-LOCAL... it spreads out with time.... with is what the electron/photon does when it leaves the gun.... it spreads
and bits of its wave can pass through both slits and interfere with themselves !!!! Measurement will cause a COLLAPSE OF THE WAVEFUNCTION to a localised point.....which will start immediately re-spreading as a new wave. It's the bugbear of quantum physics: the much-dreaded "measurment problem" the mention of which can "strike fear into any quantum physicist's eyes" (Jim Al-Khalili: in the ATOM programme).

Now Space and Time!!!! Relativity shows that they are linked.........time will influence space (e.g. through moving.......a moving body will appear to slow down time to an observer).....and space will influence time (a black hole will slow down the time of an object seen by an observer close to the event horizon/"point of no return"). Also General Relativity is a geometric theory of gravity. A large mass will distort/curve space and affect the motions of nearby objects. I could go on but won't.

Now the thorniest issue of all: What is time?....and why does it go in a forward direction only?........it's linked in with entropy and the Second law of Thermodynamics which states that entropy (A sort of
measure of disorder) will always increase. Einstein showed that time can be slowed down/sped-up but it seems to be one-way. And, there's nothing in the known laws of physics that forbids backwards time travel!!!!!! There are no satisfactory answers yet!!

As for reality, I'll leave that to philosophers.....there's more than enough to make my head ache!!

End of lecture. Sorry to show-off (I did get a First). Hope this clarifies a few things......or confuses (there's a lot to take in!!). But, I hate inaccurate statements like the above!!!

Sunday 23 January 2011

When dancing with integrity or full awareness we seem to not think about anything other than the dancing itself, we probably don’t think at all.

Even when we worked on a task for 45 minutes non-stop, none of us occupied our brains with anything other than completing the task. We didn’t think about yesterday or tomorrow, we were dealing with what we were confronted with NOW.

I feel complete; content in this state of being, and I guess everyone else does as well. So what makes us drop out of what seems to be our ‘true essence of being’? Why are we not always in this peaceful state of mind; feeling whole and fully aware?

Thoughts, opinions, preconceptions, etc, seem to distract us from the present moment. Thoughts and feelings can be so overpowering that we seem to ‘lose our true selves’ into these fake/misleading identities.

Of course we don’t want to ‘lose our minds’, we need our brain to function, but we don’t want to get carried away by unnecessary/distracting thoughts that disconnect us from our full awareness of the present moment.

How do we find the on/off button of our sometimes never-ending voices/thoughts in our heads? Maybe it is about observing and letting go/acceptance, because when fighting against distracting thoughts, you will only create another voice, which feeds the undesired state of being.
